The actress has come a long way from her Kyon Ho Gaya Na days in which she did a cameo as Aishwarya Rai’s friend. Now, after gaining oodles of confidence, the actress is making the right moves and has become the new pin-up girl in the Telugu and Tamil film industry. The doe-eyed beauty is now all set to scorch the screens in Naan Mahan Alla in which she teams up with Karthi for the first time.
Disclosing details about her role in the film, Kajal says, “I play Priya, a typical middle class girl who falls in love with Jeeva, a middle class guy, played to perfection by Karthi. The characters are so down-to-earth that anybody can relate to them. Priya is a very realistic person and is devoid of any tantrums or hullabaloo.”
Kajal is currently basking in the success of her Telugu blockbuster Magadheera and considers working with director Suseenthiran as an icing on the cake. “Suseenthiran is known for his realistic portrayal of his characters. I saw his Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu and fell in love with the film. He has recreated the magic in Naan Mahan Alla, where he has focussed on realism. There’s no scene in the film that’s exaggerated.”
Quiz Kajal about her sizzling chemistry with Karthi and she bursts into a peal of a laughter. “Karthi is an extremely talented actor and has come up with a great performance in the film. He is friendly and made me very comfortable on the sets. We got along like a house on fire and share the same rapport off screen too.”
Kajal’s last release in Tamil, Modhi Vilayadu, did not set the cash register ringing. So, is there any additional pressure on her to come up with a better performance in Naan Mahan Alla? “There’s no pressure as such but I’m improving with every film. I have been in the industry for four to five years now and I’m amazed by my own transformation. Every day has been a learning experience and an opportunity to grow as an actor. I am a director’s actor and can be easily moulded according to the needs of the character.”
So, what are the criteria that she looks into while choosing a script? “The story and my character in the film matters the most. Though a big star in a film matters a lot, that’s not my priority.”
The actress has been shuttling between Hyderabad and Chennai, but has no regrets about it. “It has been very hectic but I’m thoroughly enjoying my work. I’m kicked about every project of mine and want to deliver my best in every film. The passion for my work keeps me going.”
Is Bollywood the next step? “I have got couple of offers but I’m not in a hurry,” says Kajal, who has four Telugu projects in hand.
